Abstract
Aims: To investigate the performance of Iraqi EFL university students in using frequency adverbs by form and function and finding out the area of difficulty in this regard and suggesting remedial work for the alleviation of these difficulties.
Study Design: A diagnostic test was used in this study.
Place and Duration of Study: The practical aspect represented in a diagnostic test applied to a random sample of (50) students taken from the fourth level in the Department of English, College of Education for Human Sciences, University of Babylon during the year the academic year (2013-2014).
Methodology: In this study, the researcher constructing a test to specify the errors made in the use of adverbs of frequency; classify errors; analyze results statically; and draw conclusions.
Results: The current study indicated that the poor performance of the learners can be attributed to the following strategies: Interlingual transfer, interalingual transfer, context of learning and communication strategies.
Conclusion: These results indicate that the students face difficulty in using frequency adverbs in English and these results confirm the hypothesis of the study. This study recommends further studies about English grammar for EFL Learners.
